hexagons are the best agons- the story behind my hexie garden print
If you’ve been following along, you might have spotted my Hexie Garden fabric in yesterday’s All The Things Tote. 🌸 This design has a special place in my heart—it’s been with me for years, and I can’t help but smile when I see it out in the world now as part of my very first fabric collection, Color Pop Playground with Andover Fabrics.
Here’s the thing: I love hexagons. Always have. They were the reason I chose to make hexie flowers for my very first big English Paper Piecing (EPP) project. (Because why start small when you can dive straight into hundreds of little hexagons, right?) Around our house, we even have a running joke: “Hexagons are the bestagons.” It’s a nerdy little saying we borrowed from a science YouTube channel that my husband and boys love, and it always makes me laugh.
I first started playing with the Hexie Garden design years ago, experimenting with ways to bring my love of hexies into fabric and pattern work. In fact, the very first time this print ever appeared wasn’t in quilting cotton at all—it was on a rashguard I had made through a print-on-demand site. I wanted something bright and fun to wear at the beach instead of the boring rashguards available in stores, so I created my own. To this day, I still wear that rashguard, and every time I pull it on, it reminds me of how far I’ve come since then.
Seeing Hexie Garden take center stage in my first licensed collection feels like coming full circle. It’s a reminder of one of the most important lessons I’ve learned along the way: keep making what you love. Follow those creative sparks that light you up. Because eventually, your people—the ones who love what you love—will find you.
